MD Christian

When I think of outstanding actors in the DFW community, MD Christian is always one of the first names that comes to mind. I was first impressed by MD in the LCT production of American Idiot singing all those Green Day classics. Most recently MD was an amazing Benny in NTPA’s RENT. His smooth as silk voice, that can quickly change into a formidable belt, and his quiet, seductive presence made his Benny the best I have seen. MD is a quality performer who raises the level of any production he’s in. MD will soon be returning to the stage in RCT’s Young Frankenstein. Take a few moments to learn more about MD and his performing career.

When was your first time on stage?

My first time on stage was in 5th or 6th grade. We did a production called Pinocchio Jones. I have never heard of or seen that musical since, so I assume my music teacher partly wrote it. It was an excellent production (in my mind), and I still remember some of the lyrics!

When did you know you wanted to be an actor?

Unlike most fellow actors I know, I was a timid kid. My first official voice teacher, my best friend, was always in some production. I enjoyed watching him on stage. We have always encouraged and motivated each other. Though he doesn’t get to perform as much as he would like, it is like we have switched lives regarding the performing aspect. I enjoy the immediate gratification you can only get with a live audience. After my first performance, I was hooked and knew that this was something that I wanted to do.

Who is your greatest mentor?

My mother has been my most incredible mentor. She was a hilarious lady! It had less to do with what she said and more about how she said it. My family and I still laugh about things she would say. She is no longer with us but hearing old stories from her friends and other family members about her quotes keep her memories alive. I often think about that when delivering lines or researching characters in various productions. Education was important to her, and I know she would be so proud.

What role have you enjoyed the most in your career so far?

Getting to play the Wiz has been a role that I have enjoyed. Though the movie musical with Michael Jackson is not like the stage musical, it was one of the first musicals I could relate to, and I got to see people like me on stage.

Do you have a dream role?

Aaron Burr in Hamilton. Any role in The Color Purple (I do mean any).

What person(s) would you like to be on stage with?

Audra McDonald, Cynthia Erivo, Joshua Henry, Nathan Lane

What performances have you seen that impressed you?

Recently - Uptown Players – Kinky Boots – that cast!

Repertory Company Theatre – Godspell

What are your career goals?

I enjoy the balance in my life now. I hope to continue making artistic contributions to the DFW theatre community, and I look forward to working more on the production side.

What would people be surprised to learn about you?

I am an accomplished baker. I love to cook, and I am rather good at it. I am also a saltwater aquarium enthusiast.
