ON GOLDEN POND

GARLAND CIVIC THEATRE

ON GOLDEN POND

About the show

On Golden Pond is a 1979 play by Ernest Thompson about an aging couple, Ethel and Norman Thayer, who spend their summers at their vacation home on Golden Pond in New England. The play explores the difficulties of a long marriage, the relationship between a father and daughter, and the generation gap between young and old.

The play is inspired by the Academy Award-winning film of the same name starring Henry Fonda, Jane Fonda, and Katharine Hepburn. It opened on Broadway's New Apollo Theatre in February 1979 and ran for 3 1⁄2 months, before reopening at the Century Theatre in September 1979 and closing in April 1980 after over 400 performances. Some say the play is touching, funny, and perceptive, and that it contains a message for people of all ages.
