“One of the most exciting aspects of directing Shakespeare's plays is to ponder, ‘How am I going to do it?,’” said Duque-Guerrero. “’What will the concept be?’ The ideas are boundless because his plays center around universal themes – love, revenge, parents’ approval or jealousy, and they can be set anywhere from outer space to World War II, or at a circus or honoring other cultures. Shakespeare sets this comedy in Greece. Do I resist the urge to be different? Is doing the show as written a daring move nowadays? We set our play as written – in Greece. We are celebrating Greek culture through color, setting and music as our backdrop for our play...and what a rich backdrop it is!”
Duque-Guerrero previously directed “The Diaries of Adam and Eve” and “The Butterfly’s Evil Spell” at Hip Pocket. She is the co-founder of the theatre initiative for Artes de la Rosa (ADLR) at the Rose Marine Theatre in Fort Worth and founding artistic director of the Planet Ant Theatre in Detroit. She currently serves as the theatre director at Southwest High School. Duque-Guerrero studied mask making/mask performance at Dell’Arte International School of Physical Theater in California and majored in theatre arts with a minor in history at Texas Woman’s University. She earned a Master of Fine Arts with a performance focus at Penn State. In 2006, she proudly represented ADLR at The White House in Washington D.C., receiving the Coming Up Taller award from former First Lady Laura Bush for outstanding achievement in arts youth programming.
