Some brief thoughts on Sunday in the Park with George at Outcry Youth Theatre …or Paris and Addison are lovely this time of year.
Teenagers doing Sondheim and it’s not Into the Woods? It’s George! And, by George, they pulled it off.
I attended the Saturday matinee with the cast headed by the remarkable Brayden Lawrence as Seurat and the wonderful Ruby Allen as Dot. I have learned to expect excellence from Outcry productions and the cast of this George was more polished and professional than college productions I have seen.
The cast was beautifully costumed by Marisa Saenz and Melanie Stever and the projections and lighting by Jason Johnson-Spinos were outstanding. I was particularly impressed by Director Becca Johnson-Spinos’s use of space in the small venue and her precise choreography of the stage movement which is especially important in this musical. I also applaud the efforts of Music Director Cindy Johnston who got impressive vocals from both Lawrence and Allen in one of Sondheim’s most vocally challenging scores.
As I have stated before, I always forget that I am watching young people when I attend Outcry plays and musicals and this George was no exception. I was charmed, exhilarated, and moved by this cast who “put it together” delightfully.
