Maxton Sims

Maxton Sims has the distinction of being the youngest person to appear in Beyond the Bio. I was waiting to meet him after his performance as Mereb in Lyric Stage’s Aida when his mother introduced herself and told me Maxton was 15! I was incredulous. How could a 15-year-old have so much poise and presence on stage and make such an outstanding impression in a supporting role? I believe the answer to that is Maxton’s innate talent and dedication to his craft. Take a few moments to read about the incredibly gifted star on the rise Maxton Sims.

When was your first time on stage?

When I was 10, I was a big “Stranger Things” fan and watched all the behind-the-scenes videos. It looked like fun, so my mom signed me up for a Spring Break Musical Theater camp at Theatre Arlington. I played Steve Tally in The Best Little Theatre in Town. I just remember not knowing it was a musical until a few days before and being nervous to sing.

When did you know you wanted to be an actor?

On the last day of the Spring Break camp, I performed in front of an audience for the first time. I knew when they applauded and cheered for us that this is what I wanted to do. Nothing compares to that feeling!

Who is your greatest mentor?

First and foremost, I couldn’t have gotten this far if it weren’t for my mom. If I wanted to be an actor, she wanted it for me. I wouldn’t be involved with this magic world if it weren’t for her endless support. Another important mentor is Daniel Hernandez who has been my vocal coach for 4 years and has believed in me since the very beginning. He always pushes me beyond what I think I can do.

What role have you enjoyed the most in your career so far?

My favorite role I’ve played so far would have to be Mereb in Lyric Stage’s Aida. The amazing cast and production team made it an awesome experience. So grateful to the director, Sasha Maya Ada, for giving me the opportunity to take on the role.

Do you have a dream role?

So many! Clyde in Bonnie and Clyde, Enjolras in Les Misérables, and either Scarecrow or Tin Man in The Wiz, to name a few.

What person(s) would you like to be on stage with?

I’m a big fan of Adam Pascal. The dynamics he brings to the stage would be great to be a part of. There are also quite a few local actors that I’d love to work with. One I saw recently is Esteban Vilchez. I saw him as the Narrator in Into the Woods and then as Tarzan at Lyric Stage. He is so talented and such an exciting performer to watch. I’d love to work with him one day.

What performances have you seen that impressed you?

One performance that immediately comes to mind is Kinky Boots at Uptown Players. So much talent and so much energy from the entire cast, especially from Rachel Nicole Poole who played Lauren.

What are your career goals?

I hope to be accepted to a good Musical Theater program. And then someday, perform in a Broadway production or a national tour. It would also be fun to direct.

What would people be surprised to learn about you?

I love to cook! It’s been a favorite pastime since I was 8 or so. I love to cook breakfast in all forms. Spicy Candied Bacon is one of my favorites to make. You might also be surprised to learn that I can solve a Rubik’s cube in under 2 minutes.
