Jonah Taylor

Fresh out of Booker T. Washington High School and headed to the University of Oklahoma in the fall, Jonah Taylor is currently appearing as Otto in The Watering Hole Collective’s sensational production of Spring Awakening. Although young in years, Jonah is already a performer with great stage presence and skill on stage. He has that special, undefinable quality and appeal that sets him apart and his vocals are truly impressive. Everything about this talented young man says “Future Star.” Take a few moments to read about Jonah’s journey in the performing arts and his future goals.

When was your first time on stage?

I grew up in church and throughout my youth and had many opportunities to perform in church and in school performances.   I would say though my first real performance on stage was as Archie in 13 the Musical with DMR Adventures in Charlottesville, VA. It was the biggest stage I had ever stepped on.  It ignited my passion for acting.  I had so much fun on set and learned so much in this environment.

When did you know you wanted to be an actor?

Definitely in my role as Archie in 13 the Musical. It was the first time I had done a production other than the ones in my church. It was an incredible experience and pushed me to go into acting as a full-blown career!

 Who is your greatest mentor?

My greatest mentor is probably my mom. She has always been a strong moral compass and has stuck up for me. I don’t know where I would be without her. I give as many thanks as I can to her. She is one of the reasons I perform.

What role have you enjoyed the most in your career so far?

Easily the Lion in The Wiz that I played last year at Booker T Washington HSPVA.   The production was a historical performance for the 100-year celebration, and I grew tremendously in this role.   The cast and crew were a cohesive group, and each day was so much fun that it never felt like work.  I know I will have many more opportunities, but this experience will hold a special place in my heart forever.    It was a wonderful send off in my high school career!

Do you have a dream role?

I love anything portrayed by Christopher Jackson- he is a big inspiration for me. This will include roles like Benny from In the Heights and especially Washington in Hamilton. I hope one day to step into those roles and truly make them my own!

What person would you like to share the stage with?

I would love to play opposite Audra McDonald. Her vocal power and ability to command the stage are something I aspire to truly carry in performances and being on stage with her would be an absolute DREAM!

What performances have you seen that impressed you?

In January, I got the opportunity to see Hadestown at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta and it was phenomenal.  It was my first time in the beautiful theater and seeing the show. I have a newfound love and respect for the show! The cast was incredible, and I wanted to see it again the next day! The band, the acting, the VOCALS!!! I was glued to my seat the entire show!

 What are your career goals?

Any type of performing! Musical Theater has been a great outlet for dancing, acting, and singing but any way I can make myself known on the stage is great for me. I would like to transition a little into TV/Film and come out with some music in my future! I am attending the University of Oklahoma in the fall for my BFA and can’t wait to improve!

What would people be surprised to learn about you?

In my free time I like to cook!  I enjoy cooking for my friends and family, especially new recipes that I find online. One of my favorite things to cook is homemade bread/rolls.  It’s a great stress reliever and a fun summer hobby!
