Jazzay Jabbar

I first noticed Jazzay Jabbar in her standout dramatic role in Janelle Gray’s Rage. I had no idea that she was also blessed with a beautiful singing voice and a gift for musical comedy until I saw her as Trix the Aviatrix in The Hopeful Theater Projects The Drowsy Chaperone. If you know Chaperone, you know that Trix appears at only the beginning and end of the show. I wanted to see much more of Jazzay, and you can bet I’ll be in line for her next production! Take a few moments to learn more about Jazzay and her journey in the performing arts.

When was your first time on stage?

I’ve been on the stage since the age of five with school choir. The first time I was on stage as an actor was the age of twelve in middle school. A little play called The Clumsy Custard Horror Show in Garland, TX. Changed my life forever! I hadn’t thought of being an actress before. It never crossed my mind as I was destined to be the next Beyonce and Aaliyah. Some friends “peer pressured” me into auditioning, and I was miraculously chosen. I haven’t stopped acting since.

When did you know you wanted to be an actor?

I didn’t realize there a “gift” of acting until my freshman and sophomore year of high school. Something inside of me became whole and there was a huge sense of comfort on the stage. Every time I was on stage! Coming to the realization that I wanted to be an actor for the rest of my life was a struggle. As I originally had plans to become a singer. I want to say it wasn’t until my junior year of high school. One day it just clicked, and it was just decided, ‘Yes, this is what I want to do. This is what I need to do. To keep sane. To keep becoming a greater actor. To stay alive!”

A spiritual connection to the Arts was made that day. By then I was competing in Speech and Debate tournaments. Being around all the other amazing actors that wanted to be the best, amazing! I still can’t believe I chose Theatre Arts over Music Theory and Psychology and Marine Biology when I went to college.

Who is your greatest mentor?

In the beginning! I had zero mentors. There have always been supporters!!! Always and forever! Some may not understand why I chose the path of the Arts. But they will support! My family and friends- MY REAL TEAM has been incredibly supportive and will continue to do so! it’s been a sad, beautiful, and necessary journey as an actress.

What role have you enjoyed the most in your career so far?

I have enjoyed every role I’ve ever been cast in since 2003. I don’t usually accept or audition for roles I do not see myself loving.

Do you have a dream role?

A few dream roles I have include Bess in Porgy and Bess – I’ve wanted this role since before I knew I could sing or act. Any role in Ruined by Lynn Nottage, Rose in Fences, and Aida in Aida.

What person(s) would you like to be on stage with?

I have an awfully lengthy list. But I essentially would love to be on stage (or on film) with, Viola Davis, Issa Rae, Regina King, Angela Bassett, Anika Noni Rose, Tracie Thomas, Audra McDonald, Loretta Devine, Regina Hall, and Tracee Ellis Ross. All the African American greats acting right now! That’s just a few off the top of my head. The list is quite long!

What performances have you seen that impressed you?

I haven’t been able to attend many local performances this year. And I’m ashamed. I’ve been doing my best to stay safe from the virus. I do know that Dallas actors … there’s so much talent here! So, I’m proud to see a lot of the work that’s going on.

What are your career goals?

In a dream world, I’d like to create plays, films, and other media projects. That’s what I’d love to do for the rest of my life.

What would people be surprised to learn about you?

As a Virgo I have many lists!! But one of my important lists includes all the countries I plan to visit in the next 5 years. If anyone asks me about a 5-year plan, that’s it!
