Bryson Beavers
I first saw the terrifically talented Bryson Beavers playing a crustacean. He was in the scene stealing role of Larry the Lobster in GPAC’s SpongeBob the Musical. Bryson exudes the pure joy of performing on stage. Currently Bryson has the rare opportunity to travel to South Korea where he will be playing Cosmo in Singing in the Rain. Take a few moments to learn more about Bryson and his journey in the performing arts so far.
When was your first time on stage?
Well, technically since I have been doing church Christmas pageants since I was five. But my first big musical was my high school production was Annie Get Your Gun. A show that is dear to my heart. But I have been performing all my life from the stage to the football field on Friday nights with the marching band.
When did you know you wanted to be an actor?
I have been watching musicals all my life. My mom would sit me down to watch “Annie” and “Little Shop of Horrors” all the time as a kid. I remember seeing Rudolph the Red nosed Reindeer countless times at casa. Never thought I could do it. Really wasn't until the shows I did in High School. Performed in the musicals all 4 years. It wasn't until my junior and senior year. Junior year we did Fiddler on the Roof. I played Mendel. We had rave reviews about how we touched so many people with our show. Then my senior year, I got my first big role in Beauty and the Beast as Cogsworth. I had friends and family tell me how entertaining and amazing the show was. One guy said “I was having a bad day, until I saw your show. Was so happy at the end.” Then I took it as a sign. I want to entertain people. find it as a way of helping people. And I just love doing it. Thats when I knew what I wanted to do.
Who is your greatest mentor?
More like mentors. My mentors are my dance, Theatre, and music teachers from high school. Nick Kougias, Theatre teacher, really ignited my spark of becoming an actor. Heather Sponsel, Dance teacher, instructed me to be the best dancer that I am today. She got me into becoming a choreographer. I helped choreograph my school's show choir for two years. and last, but certainly not lease. Victoria Jones. She is the one who helped improve my singing. I wouldn't be where I am today without these three amazing instructors.
What role have you enjoyed the most in your career so far?
Oh very easy, playing Cosmo Brown in Singing in the Rain. Taking on such a classic character, I thought I wasn't up for the challenge. Knowing everyone and their grandmother have seen that “make em’ laugh” scene, I had to live up to an expectation. Now I have performed it last summer, and getting to perform as Cosmo once again in South Korea, I am over the moon to bring this performance overseas. Playing Cosmo has brought me such joy, and i can't wait to share this character once more.
Do you have a dream role?
Oh,boy that’s a hard question. I used to have just one, which was Joseph in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. It still is by the way. But one role i would love to play is Miss Trunchbull in Matilda. Growing up, i have ADORED that movie. Then when i found out it was a musical, i was enthralled with the character of Trunchbull. I have always wanted to play a role where I get to change my appearance and wear wacky costumes. Also playing Shrek is on my list. My favorite color is green, and I think I would look great in it.
What person(s) would you like to be on stage with?
What a great question. Well, I have always wanted to share the stage with my good friend Jeremy Dontray Davis. i love that man with all my heart. He has been a great friend since we met back in 2015. That man is a powerhouse of talent. And would love to share the stage with him one day. But for celebrity wish, I would love to be on stage with the great Christian Borle. I'm a huge fan of his and i love his work . Working alongside that guy would be a dream come true.
What performances have you seen that impressed you?
I have seen many shows in the great DFW area. but one show moved me. The Runway Theatre’s Production of Spring Awakening (2016) is still one of the greatest performances i have ever seen. Spring Awakening is one of mt favorite shows, and never in my life I thought I would see a production that was nothing but spectacular. The voices, the acting, the way they brought it to life. No other theatre could’ve done what they accomplished in that show. and if there was ever a reunion performance with that cast. i would be there front row.
What are your career goals?
To perform. and always performing. I love being on the stage. it helps me escape from reality. It has still been my dream to join a tour or just make it to broadway. With this trip of performing in South Korea, i really want to get back into auditioning for tours and equity stages again like i use to. Im ready to get back on track to perform full time. Also might wanna start sending in voice track for voice over work or maybe start auditioning for films. Ready to make a bigger name for myself.
What would people be surprised to learn about you?
A lot of people are surprised how im a dancer more than anything.. When I hear music, i just want to dance right on the spot. The tv show “Glee” got me into doing that. One geeky thing about me is how i can recite any tv show or movie. i don't know why but my brain can memorize movies more than I retained info fromAlgebra 2.
