Breana Deanda
Breana Deanda made such a striking impression on me as Esmeralda in Grand Prairie Arts Council’s recent production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, that I asked her to be in the column immediately. To say that Breana is powerful on stage is an understatement. She is a singing, dancing, acting dynamo. I was surprised to learn that Breana is still in college. She has the stage presence and skills of an experienced stage pro. It was also great to learn that Breana is as humble and kind as she is talented. Take a few moments to learn more about rising star Breana Deanda.
When was your first time on stage?
My first time on stage was in 7 th grade, we did a production of Into the Woods Jr. I had auditioned and the next day, the director started giving the other kids librettos and I didn’t get one, so I just assumed I wasn’t cast. Turns out I made it in; I just didn’t check the cast list! I learned a valuable lesson that day: do not assume. I got to play Florinda and I’ve been in theatre ever since.
When did you know you wanted to be an actor?
I knew I wanted to be a performer when I saw the first episode of Hannah Montana. I remember watching it on TV for the first time so vividly when I was five. All I could think of was all of her cute outfits and how much fun it seemed to sing for a living. I don’t think I considered acting until I got to do my first musical because it allowed me to sing and act, which I loved. As I continued to participate in theatre throughout high school, I really fell in love with learning to act and how to craft a character.
Who is your greatest mentor?
I have to say J. Austin Eyer, the head of the musical theatre department at UTA. He has transformed the way I approach acting, especially when I have to act through song. He is also so honest, which I appreciate, because I know I can trust his judgement when it comes to my work. I also have to mention my voice teacher, Connor Lidell. My voice has changed so much ever since starting lessons with them. Connor is so knowledgeable and is able to give the clearest notes in a way that allows me to adjust easily.
What role have you enjoyed the most in your career so far?
I absolutely loved playing “Esmeralda” in The Hunchback of Notre Dame, I feel like it let me explore so much of my own personal strength and it challenged me physically as well as vocally. Her story also resonated with me because she is such a strong woman, but her vulnerability is really what makes her such an impactful character.
Do you have a dream role?
I’ve always wanted to play Kathy in The Last Five Years. Also, anything Eva Noblezada has done I feel like I have to put on my list.
What person(s) would you like to be on stage with?
I would like to be on stage with Eva Noblezada or Lea Salonga. I look up to both of them so much because they make me feel like I could actually belong in theatre.
What performances have you seen that impressed you?
The first performance that stuck with me was In the Heights at Dallas Theatre Center. It was the first professional production I had ever seen, and my high school was a part of Project Discovery which allowed us to watch shows for free. It was the first time I had ever felt so seen and touched by a musical. I remember watching that show and being left speechless at how many people up there looked like me, and it gave me hope for a future in theatre.
What are your career goals?
I want to act full-time. I love musical theatre, so I plan on doing as many shows as possible in the DFW area after graduating. Eventually, my big dream would be to go to New York and be on Broadway. I also am interested in film as well, so who knows where life will take me!
What would people be surprised to learn about you?
I love to sew, crochet, and knit as well! Those were my primary hobbies growing up, and I used to always make beanies and scarves every year for Christmas. I also made my own prom dress in high school.
